Shop Small Map: 2018

Shop Small Saturday 2018 is November 24th. We are fortunate to have an abundance of small shops to frequent year-round and during the holidays! We asked our agents what their favorite stores to stop in for gifts are to prepare our Saturday plans. The recommendations were abundant!

Acton, MA

Handworks was suggested by Linda VanEmburgh. VanEmburgh said, "Handworks in Acton has the most distinctive, artistic gifts."

Concord, MA

"Favorite holiday small shop… hands down Nestings!" said Anna Travias. A favorite of many, this name popped up with agents and staff alike!

Revolutionary Concord was also a repeated recommendation, mentioned by owner, staff, relocation department, and our agent Nancy Wright.

A new addition to the center of Concord, Graham was mentioned by Laurie Cadigan.

Sharing a good laugh, Laura McKenna mentioned Priscilla's Candy Store, my favorite local shop for holiday gifts, quality chocolate truffles packaged beautifully, and they make the most gorgeous chocolate Santa Claus. Just don't put them in the stockings when there's a fire! Did that!"

Lexington, MA

Bobbi Tornheim mentioned the Holiday Marketplace of LexArt. Tornheim said, "Over 150 local Artisans sell hand made crafts priced from $5 to $1,200. Jewelry, hand woven clothing items, wooden bowls and boxes, some furniture, some excellent children's toys and puzzles, painting, photography, note cards, wide range of ceramics, sweaters, etc. Much of the work is Gallery  Quality." Tornheim also mentioned the location, 130 Waltham Street in Lexington, open November 30th through December 23rd from 10 AM to 5 PM most days.

Lincoln, MA

Something Special in Lincoln was noted twice, first by Terese Surrette who said "They have something special for everyone on your list."

In Lincoln, Terry Perlmutter mentioned the Old Town Hall Exchange.

Surrounding Towns

Although our offices are located in the towns mentioned above, as well as Bedford and Carlisle, they are not the only places we are fortunate to enjoy!

In Littleton, Cataldo's came up more than once. "They decorate dozens of trees with themed ornaments, have great stocking stuffers, and fun unique items," said Karen Wallace.

Nicolette Mascari also suggested B Happy in Wayland, MA, with great gifts for any home.

We hope you'll have the opportunity to visit one of the towns we get to call home during your holiday shopping this year!

Celebrate Halloween with Barrett | Sotheby's International Realty!

Five Quick Back to School Tips

Back to school is a time full of excitement and anticipation! As with any new season, there is also a lot of adjustment. Here are some quick tips to make your back to school season a breeze.

Create a Homework Caddy

We’re all familiar with the idea of a cut-out space designated for homework and task completion. For those with kids who like to mix it up, a homework caddy provides the perfect middle ground. The materials are the same, but the location can change to add new focus and light to the subject matter. Fill a basket with this year’s requirements and get to work!

Plan Go-To Lunches

We know it’s great to mix it up but having some go-to lunches to pack in a snap helps on those days when time seems to get away from us! Healthy non-perishables that can be quickly added to your reusable containers are perfect. Humus, crackers, cut up veggies, some boiled eggs, and grab-and-go fruit are all quick and easy solutions, too.

Schedule, Schedule, Schedule

Life gets busy fast! To make sure everyone is on the same page, work together and plan how you’ll keep a schedule maintained. There are so many solutions to get this done that you’re sure to find one that works for you, from online calendars, to white boards, to good old physical calendars, there’s a planner for us all.

Take Care of You

Setting a small ritual for yourself can help get each day off to a great start. Quick face mask? Walk the dog before the kids get up? Even a short breathing exercise if you have a couple of minutes can help ease tension and re-focus for the day ahead.

Outsource

When things pile up and you need a second set of hands, you can always outsource! There are automated systems for so much, delivery for everything under the sun, sitters for your kids and pets, and professionals for maintenance and advice on your home.

No matter the task, you’ve got this back to school season covered!

Close Up In Our Community Series

When you think of Real Estate, what do you think of? The search for the perfect property? The right number of beds and baths? An updated kitchen and a fenced in yard?  It’s always great to find that place that you can see yourself in, but that’s not all there is to it.

We know your search is about more than finding a house; it’s about finding a community. At Barrett Sotheby’s International Realty, our mission is to help you find both, the perfect home in the ideal community.

We have always showcased properties to help you find your house, now we are exposing you to some of the local businesses in our vibrant area, so you can get a flavor for what makes our towns so special and how committed the local businesses are to serving their communities.

Through the Close Up In Our Community video series, our agents take you with them to visit some of their favorite local places. Check out our Close Up Series page, you may find a new favorite place right in your neighborhood!

Weekend Events in Greater Boston: SoWa Open Market

Every Saturday and Sunday between April 29th and October 29th from 10am - 4pm, local vendors and artisans gather together to create the SoWa Open Market in Boston, MA. Locals and visitors alike are welcomed to the various venues along Harrison Avenue, predominantly between Paul Sullivan Way and Union Park Street. The goal? To build community and support small, local businesses.

Visit the SoWa Arts Market at 460 Harrison Avenue to meet the artisans who set-up shop for the weekend, 75-100 at a time. Carefully curated, this event provides the perfect opportunity to select art for your home, daily life, and more. Every First Friday of the month galleries open to the public from 5pm - 9pm for a night of new culture.

The SoWa Farmers Market is located at 500 Harrison Avenue, providing the ability to do some light (or heavy) shopping in place of your weekly stop to the grocer's.

Cap your time at the SoWa Open Market with the Food Truck Bazaar and the Beer Garden, both located at 540 Harrison Avenue. The Food Truck Bazaar hosts 10-15 of Boston's best food trucks, weekly. The Beer Garden is the first weekly, outdoor venue of it's kind in Boston, hosted by eatBoston.

Countless restaurants, studios, and stores are open throughout the year - including the Vintage Market at 450 Harrison Avenue. Selling antiques, vintage items, and oddities, this store is open all Sundays 10am - 4pm and alongside the Open Market on Saturdays 11am - 4pm.

The weekends of mid-spring to mid-fall allow the ability to host a variety of events, workshops, and shopping opportunities in the South End, but the festivity does not end there! This community continues various gatherings throughout the year. The Power Station, once the world's largest electric power generation plant, has been renovated and restored as a venue for events of all kinds. For more, the continually updated calendar can be found here.
