Ayer
history

Originally part of Groton, Ayer was settled in 1667 and incorporated in 1871, named in honor of Dr. James Cook Ayer, who funded the construction of the Town Hall. The town's growth was significantly influenced by the development of railroad transportation in the mid-19th century, becoming a major junction for east-west and north-south rail lines. Ayer also played a role in military history, with Camp Stevens established during the Civil War and later Fort Devens during World War I, which continues to serve as a training area for reserve forces.
