Hudson was originally a village called Feltonville, part of Marlborough, before residents petitioned for separate town status in 1865. The Massachusetts General Court approved the request in March 1866, and the new town was named for Charles Hudson, a native who donated funds toward a public library. The Assabet River powered the town's rise as a shoe manufacturing center, with 17 factories operating at the industry's peak in 1860. That industrial era, along with later ventures like the Apsley Rubber Company, drew immigrants from Ireland and French Canada and shaped the population that remains today. Manufacturing declined after World War II, and the last shoe factory was destroyed by fire in 1968, closing that chapter of the town's history.
