SomervilleHistory
Incorporated in 1842, Somerville was originally part of Charlestown and has a rich industrial history. It became a hub for brickmaking and meatpacking during the 19th century, and its proximity to Boston facilitated its growth as a working-class community. Today, remnants of its industrial past can still be seen in its architecture and historic sites like Prospect Hill, where the first Grand Union flag was raised during the Revolutionary War.
