Tyngsboro traces its origins to 1661, when Edward Tyng purchased 3,000 acres on the west side of the Merrimack River as part of a larger 200-square-mile land purchase from the Wamesit and Naticook tribes. Tyng's son Jonathan settled the land in 1675, building the Tyng Mansion House, once among the oldest homes north of Boston before it was destroyed by fire in the 1970s. The area remained part of Dunstable until it was incorporated as its own town on February 23, 1809. Early industry centered on ferries crossing the Merrimack, granite quarries, and box companies, with agriculture, sawmills, and a gristmill also shaping the local economy. Tyngsboro remained a seasonal vacation community into the late 1960s before transitioning into the year-round residential town it is today.

Tyngsboro's landmark green bridge, built in 1930 to replace an earlier wooden crossing, remains one of the town's most recognizable features and a daily link between its east and west sides.
