Patriots’ Day marks a significant day in American History, when the first battles of the Revolutionary War were fought in Concord, Lexington and Menotomy (now Arlington). Observed on the third Monday in April, there are many celebrations across the long weekend including battle reenactments and sporting events. It’s also the start of vacation week for public schools in Massachusetts, so it’s a great excuse to get out with the whole family and experience some of the history of the region.
Lexington has a full weekend of activities to mark the events of 1775. Walking tours of significant spots such as Buckman Tavern and Battle Green lead up to a reenactment of the Battle of Lexington at 5am on Monday morning. There’s also a parade and a road race. More details here.
Concord also hosts a Patriots Day Parade on the third Monday in April, recognizing those residents that fought for independence. In addition, the Concord Museum has an immersive April 19, 1775 gallery with drop-in activities, and (thanks to the Highland Street Foundation) is offering free admission on Patriots Day.
Head to Arlington for a reenactment of the Battle of Menotomy, and tours of Jason Russell House.
There are also enactment events in Lincoln, Medford, Cambridge and Boston – more details can be found here.
And for sports fans the world’s largest marathon, The Boston Marathon, is traditionally held on Patriots Day. The event attracts 500,000 spectators each year, making it New England's most widely viewed sporting event. The Boston Red Sox also have their first home game of the season on Patriots Day at Fenway Park.
