March Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners

Winter in New England is tough on homes, and as we transition into spring, a little maintenance now can prevent costly repairs later. Here’s what should be on your to-do list this March:

  1. Check for Winter Damage – Inspect your roof for missing shingles, clean out gutters, and look for ice dam damage. Snow and ice can take a toll, and catching problems early can save you from major headaches.
  2. Assess Your Basement & Foundation – With melting snow and spring rains, check your basement for any signs of leaks or moisture. Ensure downspouts are directing water away from your foundation.
  3. Service Your HVAC System – Schedule a tune-up for your air conditioning before the first warm day hits. Changing your furnace filter and cleaning vents will also improve efficiency.
  4. Refresh Your Exterior – Power wash siding, walkways, and decks to remove winter grime. If you have wooden decking, inspect for loose boards and consider resealing before outdoor season begins.
  5. Test Outdoor Systems – Check irrigation systems, inspect your hose bib for winter damage, and clean outdoor furniture so you’re ready to enjoy the warmer days ahead.
  6. Plan for Spring Landscaping – If weather permits, March is the perfect time get an early start on your spring landscaping. Take the time this month to rake up old leaves and clear up any winter debris in preparation for planting, pruning and reseeding once we are clear of overnight frost.

A little maintenance now can go a long way in protecting your home and keeping it in top shape for the year ahead. Need recommendations for local contractors? We’d be happy to help! Speak to one of our local real estate agents.
